
Earthquake hits Tonga island/ Seismic tremors, magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale

A major earthquake has shaken Tonga, an archipelago nation in the South Pacific Ocean that includes about 170 islands.
The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude 7 earthquake struck approximately 96 kilometres northeast of the main island, Tongatap.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The earthquake struck at 1:18 a.m. local time, triggering a tsunami warning.
People within the threatened area were advised to evacuate to higher ground or take shelter inside safe buildings.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu had also issued an alert warning of potentially dangerous waves associated with the earthquake, but the tsunami threat has since passed.
