Former Brazilian President Bolsonaro Under Accusation Over “Trump” Case

In Brazil, former President Jair Bolsonaro has been accused of attempting a coup to overthrow the government after losing the 2022 elections.
He is accused of, among other things, inspiring supporters' attacks on institutions, which makes the case comparable to that of Donald Trump in the US.
Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been accused of attempting a coup and leading a criminal organization after losing the 2022 election. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been accused of leading a plot to overthrow the government and undermine the country's 40-year-old democracy after his defeat in the 2022 election.
The 69-year-old will face five criminal charges related to the alleged attempt to prevent his successor, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from taking office after a tight election race.
The former Brazilian president is suspected of planning to poison his successor, assassinate a Supreme Court member, and run a "criminal organization," among other things.
Bolsonaro, a former army captain, has consistently denied breaking any laws and has described the accusations against him as a witch hunt by his political opponents.
The charges follow a nearly two-year investigation, and if the case is accepted by Brazil's Supreme Court, the former president and 33 former officials will face trial. If found guilty, Bolsonaro faces up to 12 years in prison.
The former president of Brazil was previously banned from running for public office for eight years after being accused of undermining Brazilian democracy by falsely claiming that electronic voting used in the October 2022 elections was vulnerable to hacking and fraud.
Bolsonaro never accepted defeat and left Brazil for the US two days before Lula was sworn in as president.
On January 8, 2023, his supporters attacked government buildings in the capital, Brasilia.
Some parts of the buildings were damaged and police arrested 1,500 of the violent protesters.
Bolsonaro's case has been compared to that of US President Donald Trump, who was accused of trying to overturn his 2020 election loss after supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021. That process was postponed several times and ultimately dropped after Trump was returned to power in last November's US elections.
Even in Brazil, attention is now focused on the impact that the Supreme Court's decision will have on next year's presidential elections.
Despite being banned from running, Bolsonaro remains a powerful political force and could use the trial as a platform for his agenda.
