European leaders gather for emergency meeting on Ukraine

European leaders are meeting today in an emergency meeting to discuss Russia's three-year war against Ukraine.
The meeting in Paris comes in response to concerns that the United States and Russia will negotiate an end to the war on their own, leaving Ukraine and its European allies out of the picture.
European leaders are expected to present a united front and discuss new proposals for supporting Ukraine and strengthening European security.
“It seems to be a group of EU countries that are clear that they will not be part of a poorly designed and rushed deal by [US President Donald] Trump, and that are focused on continuing their support for Ukraine,” says Majda Ruge, a senior fellow at the Berlin-based European Council on Foreign Relations.
Concerns in Europe grew after Keith Kellogg, Trump's envoy for Ukraine and Russia, said on February 15 that Europe would not be directly involved in the peace talks.
On the same day, it was announced that American and Russian officials would meet this week in Saudi Arabia to begin talks on ending the war - without Ukraine itself.
However, Trump said on February 16 that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would "be involved" in peace talks.
Just a few days ago, however, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that Washington is no longer "primarily focused" on European security.
These statements caused alarm and led European leaders to seek answers to what they see as Washington's unilateral approach to ending the war in Ukraine.
European officials warned that a hastily agreed peace deal or ceasefire would undermine Ukraine and broader European security.
Europe is Ukraine's biggest financial supporter.
With the exception of Hungary and Slovakia, the country at war has widespread support on the continent./ REL
