Meloni in front of judges, 51 million Italians head to the ballot boxes for

Italian citizens have begun voting since 7 am today for the confirmatory constitutional referendum on justice reform.

Over 51 million voters can participate in the process, including more than 5.4 million who live abroad.

The voting centers will remain open today until 23:00 and tomorrow, Monday, March 23, they will reopen at 7:00 and close at 15:00. Immediately after the close of voting, the counting of ballots will begin. Being a confirmatory referendum, no quorum is required for its validity.

The ballot paper, green, contains the question: “Do you approve the text of the law on the revision of articles 87, 102, 104, 105, 106, 107 and 110 of the Constitution, on the establishment of the Disciplinary Court and changes in the judicial organization?” Voters must answer “Yes” or “No”.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says these changes are necessary to ensure impartiality, especially to remove the influence of what she calls "left-wing political groups" that run the judicial system.

Opponents, meanwhile, argue that this will weaken the power and independence of judges and prosecutors, making them more susceptible to government control in a manner similar to Viktor Orbán's model in Hungary.

To vote, citizens must present themselves at the center with a valid identification document and voter card.

Turnout data will be announced at 12:00, 19:00 and 23:00 on Sunday, and at 15:00 on Monday, when vote counting will begin.
