Today's Sultan Nevruzi/ Here's how this holiday was born and what its

Today is the national holiday of Sultan Nevruz, a religious holiday that has special significance for the Bektashi community.

March 21 marks the beginning of spring, but for many people around the world it is also the start of Sultan Nowruz, or as it is otherwise known, the Persian New Year.

Although most countries in the world celebrate it on March 21st, in Albania this holiday is celebrated on the 22nd.

So what is Sultan Nevruzi?

Nowruz means 'new day' in Persian and has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. Traditionally, it begins as soon as the spring equinox occurs. This holiday also marks the first day of the Iranian calendar.

Nowruz is celebrated in the Middle East, Central Asia, India, Georgia, and Albania.

Usually, this celebration lasts for three days. Bektashi believers exchange visits with each other and then perform religious rites. They help people in need and, according to tradition, believers distribute milk and sherbet, which symbolize the purification of the body and soul.

On holiday days, Bektashis plant flowers in their homes or place olive branches at the entrances.

For Sultan Nevruz, believers must sacrifice a sacrificial animal. Roasted meat is not missing from their tables. The traditional dessert of this holiday is sultiashi. This dessert consists of milk, which is a symbol of mother's milk; rice, which symbolizes grains and abundance, and sherbet that is taken while singing in the tekke. Kabuni can also be cooked as a dessert (with rice, meat broth, sugar, raisins and nuts). In the plain areas, a flatbread is also made that children roll in the wheat fields to bring abundance to the family.
