Turkey firmly opposes Trump's Gaza relocation plan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has firmly opposed US plans to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip – and has instead called on Israel to rebuild the widely destroyed coastal area.

"From our perspective, proposals that aim to displace Palestinians from the land where they have lived for thousands of years should not be taken seriously," Erdogan said at a conference in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

"No one has the power to cause a second 'Nakba' on the Palestinian people, nor will they ever have," he said.

The term "Nakba", from Arabic for catastrophe, refers to the flight and displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians in the first Middle East war in 1948 following the creation of the Israeli state.

"Instead of seeking a new homeland for the people of Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should bear responsibility for the damage caused during the military operation against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Gaza," Erdogan said.

US President Donald Trump yesterday reiterated his much-criticized plans to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

Trump aims to displace Palestinians and is committed to buying and owning the Gaza Strip.

The expulsion of more than 2 million people would violate international law, while the United Nations has warned of the risk of "ethnic cleansing."
