Linda De Sousa Abreu, a 31-year-old officer at HMP Wandsworth prison in London, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being filmed having sex with a prisoner while on duty.
The incident took place on June 25 last year and video of the incident quickly spread on social media, leading to De Sousa Abreu being identified and arrested by the Metropolitan Police at Heathrow Airport on June 28.
During the court hearing, Judge Martin Edmunds emphasized that the officer's action was a serious violation that undermined discipline in the prison and endangered the safety of her colleagues.
De Sousa Abreu pleaded guilty to breach of public duty. She was sentenced to 15 months in prison, half of which she will serve in custody and the rest on probation.
The Prison Service has stressed that it is committed to fighting corruption and strengthening staff vetting procedures, guaranteeing that such serious violations will not be tolerated.
