Filmed "playing" with a legally protected animal, Australia ready to

Australia is reviewing the visa of an American tourist after she violated the country's laws by separating a wombat, a type of marsupial that is a protected species, from its mother.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Sam Jones is seen separating the baby from his mother, while the latter follows him from behind. Yolande Vermaak, who works to save wombats, told the media.

"I think the first time I saw this video, I felt anger. You know, just a lot of anger about what she did."

Meanwhile, the country's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese did not spare the irony.

"It's intolerable, you know? I suggest that the so-called influencer try some other Australian animals. Take a baby crocodile, separate it from its mother, and see how it goes."

Vermaak also expressed concern about the way Jones was holding the marsupial while being filmed by her partner.   "There's a lot of pressure on the little one's back. They're not held like that."

It is not yet known when the footage was filmed, but it appears the incident took place on a country road, somewhere in southeastern Australia, where most of these marsupials are found.

Meanwhile, the video has been reported and deleted from TikTok and Instagram. Jones did not respond to CNN's request for comment.

A media outlet in Australia reported that the American tourist had responded to online criticism that the mother and child returned to the forest unharmed.
