Is Europe preparing for war? Record arms orders

The wind of war is blowing in Europe, and the arms industry is also proving this.

The German military vehicle manufacturing company "Rheinmetall", one of the largest in Europe, has announced record requests in recent weeks for the purchase of weapons from European Union countries.

German media quotes the executive director of this firm, Armin Paperger, who, in presenting the annual results of Rheinmetal, which is headquartered in Düsseldorf, stated that requests and orders for this year have reached 55 billion euros, 17 billion more than last year.

"We are extremely behind on work,"  Paperger told German media, calling for increased capacity to handle orders, as warehouses have also been emptied in recent years with weapons sent to Ukraine.

The head of Rheinmetall says that never in his 30-year career at the company has he encountered such high demand and expects orders this year to reach up to 400 billion euros.

Record orders for armaments caused the value of Rheinmetall's shares on the stock exchange to reach 56.6 billion this week, surpassing for the first time even Volkswagen, which holds the crown as the largest automobile manufacturing firm on the continent.

As Washington withdraws as the guarantor of Europe's security, European Union countries are planning to multiply military spending due to the risk of the Russian war spilling over the Ukrainian border.
