Plane disappears in Alaska/Search begins for traces of plane with 10 people on

A plane with 10 people on board has been reported missing in the state of Alaska.

American authorities immediately launched a search after the futures vehicle lost track.

The US Coast Guard for the Alaska region said the plane was 12 miles (19 km) above the open sea on a flight from Unalakleet to Nome, the territory which has been placed entirely within the perimeter where the plane is being searched.

But the fire department said the search was being hampered by weather and poor visibility.

The two cities are about 236 km from each other across Norton Sound, an inlet of the Bering Sea on the west coast of Alaska.

Search and rescue crews are working to reach the last coordinates recorded by the flight, state officials said in a statement.

According to data from flight tracker FlightRadar 24 was last seen over Norton Sound at around 3:16 p.m.

The 10 people on board consisted of nine passengers and a pilot, the Alaska Department of Public Safety said.

Alaska has mountainous terrain and severe weather. Many villages are not connected by roads, and small planes are used to transport people and goods.

US air safety investigators meanwhile continue to probe two deadly incidents in recent weeks, including a mid-air collision between a Black Hawk helicopter and a passenger plane near Washington, DC, that killed 67 people, and the crash of a medevac plane in Philadelphia that killed 7 others.
