Statement/ Trump optimistic again: US and Tehran in 'good talks'

US President Donald Trump said today that the United States is having "good talks" with Iran and that there is a possibility of reaching an agreement on the conflict between the two countries, but warned that US attacks would resume if the negotiations did not yield results.
Washington abruptly suspended a two-week campaign of airstrikes against Iran on Saturday, in what was the US president's latest strategic turn in the five-month conflict.
"We're talking now. We're having good talks... I think there's a good chance something will happen and if it does, great. If not, we'll go back to what we were doing two days ago," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
Contrary to the US president's optimistic comments, Tehran appeared to quickly test the ceasefire in the US military campaign, after Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq reported drone strikes on Monday.
Saudi Arabia said it had shot down drones targeting oil facilities, including areas in the capital Riyadh. According to Saudi authorities, the drones were launched from Iraq by armed groups backed by Iran, while Riyadh said it reserves the right to respond.
Meanwhile, Iran's Houthi allies in Yemen said they had attacked the 1,200-kilometer East-West Pipeline, which carries oil to the main Saudi Red Sea port of Yanbu. They justified the attack as retaliation for what they said were violations of Yemeni airspace by Saudi drones.
Iran has said it does not seek to resume peace talks with the US, although it will halt its attacks as long as the ceasefire announced by Trump continues.
Tehran also said it continues to have control over the Strait of Hormuz, a key waterway for global energy supplies, through which Trump has demanded that ships be allowed to pass freely.
Falling oil prices
The end of the American campaign, after 13 consecutive nights of escalating bombing, as well as Trump's statements about negotiations with Tehran, caused a sharp drop in oil prices.
Brent crude, which last week briefly topped $100 a barrel for the first time since May, fell about 8.2% on Monday, falling below $89 a barrel. At one point, the price reached as low as $87.55.
Trump's decision to suspend the military campaign came after advice from US military leaders that the bombing had reached the limit of what it could achieve, according to a US official and several US media reports, Reuters writes.
