A 24-year-old man of Albanian origin has been identified by Italian police as the suspected author of graffiti with insults and death threats against Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the police, displayed on the walls of the Metropolitan Gallery in the city of Siena.
According to Italian authorities, the incident occurred on June 16, when large graffiti in black paint appeared in the center of Siena, where in addition to insults to Meloni there were also insults to police officers. The episode caused strong reactions in the city and the investigation was immediately entrusted to the special Digos unit, under the coordination of the Siena Prosecutor's Office.
Thanks to the analysis of security camera footage and evidence collected in the area, investigators were able to identify the suspect just six days after the incident. However, he had initially become inaccessible to authorities.
The suspect is a 24-year-old of Albanian origin, born in Italy and residing in Florence. According to authorities, he has had an international protection residence permit for about 15 years and frequently visits Siena, as he has acquaintances and friends in the city.
In recent days, the young man has been located by police patrols during checks in the historic center of Siena. He was found precisely in the Metropolitan Gallery, the place where he is suspected of having created the graffiti.
After identification procedures by the Scientific Police, the 24-year-old was reported at large for damage and pollution of another's property under aggravating circumstances, threats and insults to a political or administrative body of the state.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, the Chief of Siena Police, Ugo Angeloni, has signed a preventive measure against him that prohibits him from entering and returning to the territory of the municipality of Siena for four years.
Italian authorities emphasize that the investigations are still in the preliminary phase and, according to the principle of the presumption of innocence, the criminal responsibility of the young man will only be determined by a final court decision.
