"They will throw the key into the sea"/ What lawyer Maks Haxhia

The sensational news of Ergys Agas's arrest yesterday evening seems to have stirred up a lot of waters in Albanian politics and media. While there is no reaction from the majority, the leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, immediately after the news cast doubts on his arrest.

Is it a real arrest or a conditional surrender? - he asks in the quick reaction he made on his FB page last night.

In fact, there are rumors on the internet and in various media outlets that Agasi could be a collaborator of SPAK and the "arrest" could have been a controlled operation. On the other hand, Berisha has left it to be understood that at the time Ergys Agasi was on the run, he was protected by SPAK and the police, but they could also "get rid of him".

His lawyer, Maks Haxhia, also spoke about Agas's surrender after being declared wanted on January 16 of this year, immediately after learning from SPAK the serious charges for which his client is being investigated.

At the time, he stated that he had no contact with his client, only with his family, as he was abroad. Haxhia said that he had not yet received the full file of charges, but warned that if Agasi surrendered, then justice would "throw the keys into the sea," a metaphor that implies a very long prison sentence.

"This situation that has been created, by raising serious accusations, makes the implementation of the security measure place him in a position where he no longer has any chance of communicating with justice. Mr. Agasi, according to the information I have from the family, is not in Albania. In this situation, only if there was someone who would 'throw the key into the sea' could he come and appear before the justice authorities. In conditions where there is no evidence and no material for the accusations, only if he were crazy would he come," said the lawyer on January 16, 2026.

SPAK accuses Ergys Agas of six criminal offenses, including involvement in a structured criminal group and a suspected scheme to manipulate public tenders at AKSHI./Alfapress.al
