Suspected of stealing 69 million lekë, the Court releases the former director of the Durrës Post Office from prison

The Durrës Court has changed the security measure for the former director of the Albanian Post branch in Durrës, Elisabeta Mataj, replacing "prison arrest" with "house arrest".

Mataj had been in custody since July, after being put under investigation for the embezzlement of around 69 million new lek, funds intended for the payment of pensions at the Albanian Post branches in Shijak and Krujë.

In the initial phase of the investigation, the Durrës Court imposed the security measure of “prison arrest” on Elisabeta Mataj. The decision was appealed by the defense, but the Court of Appeals upheld the prison arrest measure, causing the former director to continue her detention.

Two other employees of the Albanian Post are also included in this criminal file, who are suspected of having played a role in the scheme of embezzling a considerable amount of money.

These are Valbona Duni, former head of finance, and Paola Dana, treasurer. Unlike Mataj, they were initially placed under house arrest.

According to suspicions raised by the prosecution, the funds that were supposed to be used for the payment of pensions at the Post Office branches in Shijak and Kruja were not administered according to procedures and an amount of around 69 million new lek was missing.

The investigation aims to determine the specific responsibility of each of the suspects, the manner in which the financial transactions were carried out and the destination of the money. Elisabeta Mataj, Valbona Duni and Paola Dana continue to be under investigation and their criminal responsibility will be determined at the end of the trial.
