How the residents of Taçi were cleared of their lands/ Fortis Energy grabbed 412 hectares of land and pastures for a solar power plant

In June of last year, the Albanian government approved through a special decision the construction of a 62-megawatt solar power plant in the village of Taç, Kolonja.
According to the decision, the project would cover an area of 412 hectares and the beneficiary company was Fortis Energy and Construction. This company is owned by a Turkish businessman named Mehmet Uckardes.
The use of such a large area had a direct impact on the residents of the area. It jeopardized their income and livelihood.
Unheard by the institutions of their state, at a time when neither the mirror nor the faithful presence had been invented, the residents of the village of Taç i Sipërm rose in protest in January of this year.
Residents indicated that over 40 local livestock farmers, who raise sheep and cows, have been operating on these pastures for years. They stated that the taking of these pastures directly threatens the livelihoods of families who depend on livestock farming.
According to them, these lands have been traditionally used by the community and constitute the main source of survival for the village.
"How will we live? These are the village pastures. This village has lived on them. If they take them away from us, where will we take our livestock? There are about 40 farmers who graze sheep and cows on these lands," the residents said.
But their protests fell on deaf ears. Following the government's decision, Erion Isai and the Kolonja Municipal Council quickly approved the other necessary permits for the project. Meanwhile, in May of this month, the National Territorial Council also approved the construction permit, paving the way for the start of construction of the photovoltaic park.
The residents claim that they have ownership documents for part of the land that falls within the large 412-hectare area that was seized by the Turkish businessman, and that they have filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office regarding this matter. According to them, the case is now in court for review on the merits.
"We have land titles. They have taken them from us and we have sued them. Now we are waiting to see how it will end," say the residents.
But the outcome is already known. The Turkish company is moving forward with construction. The pastures and lands to which the residents of Upper Taçi had their livelihoods tied are now being destroyed by the overlapping of massive panels./ kapitali.al
