The American newspaper 'Contra Costa Herald' has published a profile of the new US ambassador to Tirana, Eric Wendt, who will arrive in Tirana soon. The newspaper writes that Wendt is originally from California and lived and graduated from Clayton.

“Retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General Eric Wendt is the former commander of NATO's Special Operations Headquarters and served for 30 years as a member of the 'Green Beret' Special Forces,” the newspaper writes.

“Wendt retired from active duty on March 1, 2021, concluding more than 34 years of military service. His retirement ceremony marked the end of a career that took him from the infantry platoon to the highest levels of NATO command. His legacy is that of a soldier-diplomat who has consistently operated at the intersection of special operations, international politics, and alliance management.”

"In retirement, Wendt continues to contribute to the national security debate. His insights, based on decades of direct experience leading in complex geopolitical environments, are sought after in consulting and strategic advisory roles. He remains a respected voice on issues of special operations, counterterrorism, and international security cooperation."

“Wendt’s operational philosophy is deeply influenced by the Special Forces motto ‘from, with and through.’ He believes in the primary importance of enabling partner nations to ensure their own security, rather than imposing solutions on them from the outside. This approach emphasizes building long-term relationships, developing capabilities, and respecting sovereignty as the sustainable path to stability.”

“He sees special operations not as an isolated instrument of power, but as a fully integrated element of a broader national strategy. His career reflects the conviction that military force, especially special operations, must be accompanied by diplomatic engagement and a deep understanding of political and social contexts in order to be truly effective and legitimate,” the newspaper writes.

Furthermore, American media emphasizes that he comes to Albania while the country is engulfed in protests.

“Wendt can expect to face one of the demonstrations taking place in Albania. According to a statement on the demonstrations issued by the Embassy on September 8, 2026: Nighttime demonstrations continue in Tirana, with protesters gathering in Skanderbeg Square. Other demonstrations may take place in the coming days and potentially in other cities. Protests and large gatherings may begin peacefully, but escalate quickly and without warning, disrupting traffic and services and, in some cases, turning violent. Protests may also spread to surrounding areas, including government buildings. Embassy personnel in Tirana have been advised to avoid demonstrations, especially near government institutions. Increased police presence, road closures, detours and traffic disruptions can be expected in the hours before and during the protests ,” the newspaper writes.
