FRANCE24: Albanians' anger continues after 100 days of protests, Rama's resignation is demanded
Albanian anger remains unchanged on the 101st consecutive day of protests.
Chaos prevails in front of the Assembly.
Despite the heavy police presence, some lawmakers, still inside their vehicles, try to find a way out as they confront the protesters.
In this tense confrontation, several people were arrested by law enforcement.
"They were very violent, but they don't understand that their violence is making us even more determined and we will bring even more people here. They think that by arresting us, by illegally holding us in prison, they think they can scare us, but it's exactly the opposite. We are not afraid," says one protester.
At the heart of this protest movement lies a luxury real estate project by Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump's son-in-law and daughter, in a protected natural area in southwestern Albania.
The flamingo has become the symbol of this movement, which is also channeling protesters' anger at the government and its alleged corruption. People are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
“We are here because this is what we want. The young people are very determined. Life is getting harder and the government is not listening. We believe that Albania can do better. We want a government that listens to its people and gives young people opportunities and respects their future,” says another protester.
Another demand of the protesters is the repeal of the law on protected areas. Amended in 2024, the law is now more favorable to investors, at the expense of the environment, according to the protesters.
