Serbia will pay for "Mladic"/ Negotiations with the EU are reviewed, Brussels warns Belgrade after honors for the criminal

The European Commission openly warned Serbia that recent political developments in the country will be taken into account when considering the possibility of continuing negotiations for its membership in the European bloc.

The warning comes after the Serbian authorities' decision to reserve a funeral with high state and military honors for Ratko Mladic, the former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Guillaume Mercier, the European Commission's spokesperson for enlargement, said, " As you know, discussions on Group 3 are currently underway with member states. And this discussion must take into account the recent political developments that we have seen ."

For years, the European Commission has supported the advancement of accession negotiations between the EU and Serbia, recommending the opening of Group 3, for which Belgrade is considered technically ready. The last intensive engagement on this issue was before the summer holidays, when the EC called on member states to reach an agreement on the opening of the group and, in this way, unblock the negotiation process, which has remained practically deadlocked for almost five years.

Serbia has not opened any new negotiation chapters since December 2021. Initially, one of the main reasons for the blockage of the process was the inconsistency of Serbia's foreign policy with that of the EU, in particular Belgrade's refusal to join sanctions against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine. Later, concerns about the rule of law and democratic reforms increased the skepticism of some member states, and now, the situation has been further complicated by developments after the death and burial of Mladic.
