Kosovo is nowhere.

Kosovo is nowhere.

No one knows what will be on the table when Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meet. We can only hope that America will not abandon Kosovo.
(continued from the previous article)
When Hashim Thaçi was reading the Declaration of Independence in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, Albanians around the world were grateful to the United States of America for defending and fighting for the Albanian cause, like no other country in the world. That Declaration was the finale of a century-long political, diplomatic and military war led by the United States in support of Albanians in the Balkans. No other country on the planet has had such strong support since the beginning of the 20th century as Albania and the Albanians. Our nation exists as such only because of the United States. Whoever forgets or ignores this fact is simply a useless idiot.
We Albanians have not fully understood why the United States was our greatest protector in such a conflict-ridden world, especially considering the Albanian factor - because we were and continue to be a small and underdeveloped country in a corner of a continent immersed in conflicts. What interests did the United States have that protected us from extinction, that insisted on the right for an Albanian state to exist, that never gave up on us even in the darkest times, that unequivocally supported the right of the Albanians of Kosovo to freedom and independence, that protected the Albanians from ethnic cleansing and liberated the country from a barbaric army and declared its independence?! It is possible that many of us think that the United States has only done its duty, and we often accuse them of having done little, because they should have done more, and they should have even bombed France and England, in revenge for the injustices that were done to us during, before and after the declaration of Independence in 1912.
But unfortunately, things do not work that way.
When the United States defended Albania and the Albanians, many European countries were the great powers of the world. The end of the Second World War froze the geopolitical map of Europe that was established in Yalta for about 4 decades, while the last three decades have transformed the geopolitical map of the globe. Europe itself is no longer what it was in the First and Second World Wars, while other global powers are shifting the centers of political and economic gravity. The question is: where are we Albanians in this remaking of the international order? Have we resolved the centuries-old problems with our invading neighbors?
The answer is - No, we are nowhere.
Tomorrow marks 17 years since Kosovo declared Independence. Since that day, several wars have been fought in the world, several regimes have fallen, while new regimes have been consolidated. Google will celebrate its 20th anniversary, the Russia-Ukraine war is expected to end, Donald Trump has returned to the White House, Europe has lost weight, China has become scary, and India too.
While these epochal changes were taking place in the world, in Kosovo they were fighting over who was the best and the bravest. In fact, the real brave men had been killed in the war, while the United States were the liberators. The internal political war turned into a shameful war against the United States, exactly what Belgrade wanted and sponsored the most.
Although the United States had made it clear that a comprehensive agreement with Serbia was now needed, and that the final goal should be the recognition of Kosovo by Serbia and membership in the UN, this never happened. There was always one or more factors that combined in the strangest way - which made finalization impossible. Often, Kosovo politicians held folkloric and irrational positions, thus wasting time, energy and, what is most important, consecutive cases. Endless declarations, meetings, successive trips of American envoys to Kosovo, press conferences, lobbying and endless efforts - but Kosovo's impasse and stubbornness continued to disappoint friends and delight its enemies.
The fatigue of American diplomacy from the stubborn stance of Kosovo politicians was turning into nervousness, while world geopolitics was changing by the hour. The wars in the Middle East, in Syria, Libya and Iraq were serious signs before Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. However, American support, despite the signs of nervousness, was still maintained. But Kosovar politicians continued their petty squabbles at the expense of the country's security and future, without worrying about what was happening around the world, and that global geopolitics was changing by the hour.
A new political movement began in Kosovo with the meaningful name "Vetvendosje" which very quickly became the main obstacle to any American effort to finally resolve the status of Kosovo. Its leader Albin Kurti managed to win over the majority of citizens, and to a large extent to turn them from admirers of the United States, into ungrateful and some of them into haters of it. Thus, Albin Kurti and VV became the most precious gift for Serbia, because he was fulfilling its wildest dreams; he was antagonizing Kosovo with the United States and was preventing the final solution and consolidation of Kosovo's statehood. In other words, Albin Kurti was giving Serbia the necessary time for the global geopolitical balance to change. In this sense, Albin Kurti is the most deserving.
Now the game has changed, nothing is the same and the whole world is holding its breath. The United States no longer considers its neighbors or its traditional allies; it does not consider Great Britain, Germany, France and Italy. Donald Trump despises NATO and will dismantle traditional security institutions. Europe itself knows that it has lost its former glory, and that in the eyes of the United States, Europeans are a few rascals who deserve to understand their place in the new global order.
Donald Trump will solve the war in Ukraine directly with Vladimir Putin. Imagine how Great Britain, France - both nuclear powers and members of the Security Council - are being bypassed; Germany and Ukraine itself are being bypassed from a decision-making that will definitively change the Old Continent.
If Donald Trump does not ask about England, France and Germany - do you think I will ask about Kosovo?! Because at the table where Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will sit will be a map of Ukraine, Europe and the Balkans. Kosovo will also be there. And no one has any guarantee that Kosovo will enjoy President Trump's veto; it will be a small restaurant or a fat tip for President Putin.
Albanian politicians have no idea what will happen in a few weeks in Saudi Arabia when the two presidents sit at the table. We can only hope that America will not abandon Kosovo. Most likely, the British and the French do not know either. But unfortunately for us, we are neither Great Britain nor the French Republic. We
can only hope that on that day they will forget our existence. But the chances are close to zero.
