Research: One in 20 women worldwide is diagnosed with breast cancer

One in 20 women worldwide is diagnosed with breast cancer, while 1 in 70 is likely to die from the disease during her lifetime, according to research published in the journal Nature Medicine.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women. Every minute, four women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide, while one woman loses her battle with the serious disease.
In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) to achieve an average annual reduction in breast cancer mortality of 2.5%.
Researchers analyzed data on breast cancer incidence and mortality rates in women in 185 countries. They found that in 2022, there were 2.3 million new cases and 670,000 deaths from breast cancer worldwide. However, the distribution of these cases was uneven.
In countries with higher Human Development Indexes (HDI, a system used to measure a country's overall quality of life) breast cancer rates are higher.
In contrast, in countries with lower HDI quality of life indices, women diagnosed with breast cancer had disproportionately higher mortality rates.
