Parliamentary elections/ Polling stations in Kosovo close. When are the first

Polling stations across Kosovo have closed for the parliamentary elections. They opened at 07:00 in the morning, with voting taking place in 2,589 polling stations. The counting is expected to begin soon after, with the first results expected before midnight.

Around 2 million citizens, inside and outside Kosovo, had the right to vote, which was exercised by around 40% of them. Participation which appears lower than in the 2021 parliamentary elections.

The citizens of Kosovo today elected the new parliamentary composition, which will then create the new executive of Kosovo. There are four candidates for prime minister, Albin Kurti, leader of VV and incumbent prime minister, Bedri Hamza, candidate from the ranks of PDK, Lumir Abdixhiku, leader of LDK, and Ramush Haradinaj, leader of the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo. There are 28 political entities and one independent candidate in the race.

On February 8, for the first time, Kosovo citizens in the diaspora were able to vote in diplomatic missions in 19 different countries around the world. Also, yesterday, the postal voting process was concluded. Out of 20,324 citizens eligible to vote in Kosovo's diplomatic missions, the Central Election Commission announced that 15,552 or 73.56 percent voted. The diaspora votes will be counted on Monday.

Meanwhile, around 80 thousand Kosovo citizens residing abroad voted by mail out of over 100 thousand who were registered.

In these elections, the high participation of the Serb community in municipalities inhabited by them in Kosovo was striking. The policy of boycott that Belgrade constantly exercised over the Serb population seems to have come to an end.

The Head of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EOM), Nathalie Loiseau, said that 104 observers are on the ground, as part of the mission, supervising the electoral process in Kosovo.

Meanwhile, the coalition of non-governmental organizations, Democracy in Action, monitored the parliamentary elections with 500 observers who were deployed at 500 polling stations.
