Maresca begins the difficult mission to return Manchester City to the top of Europe

Enzo Maresca has taken over at Manchester City and now faces one of the toughest tasks in European football: succeeding Pep Guardiola, the coach who won 17 major trophies with the club.
Maresca says comparisons with Guardiola will be inevitable from the first few games, but insists that this does not create pressure on him. According to him, Guardiola has been the best coach in the world for the last 15-20 years and succeeding him is a difficult task, but at the same time a privilege.
The Italian knows City well, having been part of Guardiola's staff in the 2022-2023 season, when the team won the treble.
According to Maresca, Guardiola's influence has changed the way of playing in Europe: initially everyone wanted to imitate Barcelona, then Bayern and in England Manchester City.
The day before officially signing, Maresca met with Guardiola in Barcelona.
The new coach says he spent several hours with Guardiola to hear his thoughts after a decade at the club, but stresses that he also wants to see the team for himself and form his own assessment.
The change has also been reflected in the club's facilities. Maresca has chosen a different office, while Guardiola's has been turned into a meeting room.
During the months before taking office, the Italian devoted more time to his family, but also to artificial intelligence.
Maresca says he took two courses on artificial intelligence, with the aim of better understanding how it works and the opportunities it offers.
Now his real challenge begins on the pitch: to build his own Manchester City after the Guardiola era.
