Thaçi remains in detention until the verdict is announced

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi will remain in custody in The Hague until the verdict is announced in the court case where he is accused along with Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi.
The Trial Panel of the Specialist Chambers has decided not to approve the defense's request for the release of the former president of Kosovo.
The decision, dated August 10, assesses that there is insufficient information to conclude that Thaçi would evade justice if released.
However, judges have found that there are still risks that he could hinder the progress of proceedings or influence witnesses.
According to the Trial Panel, there is a sufficient risk that Thaçi, if released, could interfere with the proceedings of the Specialist Chambers and commit other criminal offences against persons he may perceive as opponents of the KLA, including witnesses who have given evidence in this case.
“The Panel concludes that, at this time, there continues to be insufficient information before it to justify a finding that Mr. Thaçi may evade justice if released. However, the Panel is satisfied, based on the relevant standard, that there is a sufficient risk that Mr. Thaçi will obstruct the progress of the Specialist Chambers’ proceedings and that he will commit further crimes against those perceived as opponents of the KLA, including witnesses who have given evidence in this case ,” the decision states, Klankosova.tv reports.
The verdict against him, Veseli, Selim and Krasniqi is expected to be announced on 16 September 2026. The Specialist Chambers have officially confirmed that the public announcement of the verdict has been scheduled for this date.
In the same decision, Chief Justice Charles Smith ordered that the parties no longer submit submissions regarding the upcoming review of the detention measure against Thaçi, which, according to the deadlines, should have taken place on October 9, 2026.
The Trial Panel has assessed that such a review is no longer necessary at this stage, given that the verdict is scheduled to be announced on September 16.
“The Panel notes that, in accordance with Article 41(10), the next detention review of Mr. Thaçi is, in principle, scheduled to take place on Friday, 9 October 2026, unless the Trial Judgment is delivered in the meantime,” the decision states.
The trial of Thaçi, Veseli, Selim and Krasniqi in the case of war crimes and crimes against humanity is taking place at the Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
The Special Prosecution Office accuses them of a series of criminal offenses that, according to the indictment, are related to the war and post-war period in Kosovo. All four defendants have pleaded not guilty and have denied the charges against them.
