It's a Kremlin 'crusade' against young women who earn quite well in Russia by publishing photos of their bodies.
Until now, these women posed for likes, hearts and, above all, for a lot of rubles. Just a few years ago, Russian porn stars built careers that brought them millions and even appeared on television programs. Today, they tremble in front of the court and risk ending up in a labor camp.
Dictator Vladimir Putin is targeting these women for posting explicit photos and videos online. Even bikini photos are suddenly being treated as a criminal offense.
The case of Sofya Vershinina, 21, has recently attracted a lot of attention. Under the stage name "Sonya Marmeladova", the Muscovite earned a lot of money from the content she published on Telegram and OnlyFans.
She could afford a luxurious life and had tens of thousands of followers. But then the state knocked on her door.
Sofya was convicted of distributing pornographic materials. She narrowly escaped imprisonment after showing remorse. The fine was around 50,000 euros, while she was also sentenced to three years of probation and a ban on using the internet.
The prosecutor had requested three and a half years in prison in a labor camp.
Her gold iPhone 16 Pro Max remained seized, while the sex toys and accessories that had served as evidence were returned to her.
Sofya is not an isolated case. Another model and influencer, Diana Shurygina, 27, is still in custody awaiting trial.
Anastasia Oysaannikova, 24, known by her stage name “Nastya Kholod,” has also been arrested on suspicion of illegally producing and distributing pornographic material. She and Diana have produced, both together and separately, adult content on OnlyFans.
Meanwhile, a large portion of previously freely accessible erotic content has disappeared from the Russian internet. Platforms have deleted content, various sites have been blocked, and state control over the online space has been further expanded.
The message from the Kremlin is clear: Anyone who makes money from provocative content risks facing criminal charges and imprisonment.
The Russian leadership justifies this campaign by defending so-called “traditional values.” Officially, the state says it is protecting society. Human rights organizations and Kremlin critics, on the other hand, accuse the authorities of using this justification to increasingly interfere in the private lives of citizens.
Or, put another way: The Kremlin is deciding how women are allowed to live, what they can and cannot show.
