Alarming situation at Tirana Zoo! Animals writhe in high temperatures, without water and sick

The animals at the Tirana Zoo, at a time when temperatures reach 38 degrees Celsius, are seen exhausted, tired and sick, as they try, in an environment that does not at all resemble their natural habitat, to catch the rare shadows that can protect them from the scorching sun.

Bears, lions, wolves, but also other animals, such as cows and horses, are seen writhing in heat and thirst, in environments that clearly leave no doubt that they do not offer the minimum conditions for coping with this extreme heat that has engulfed the country this August.

It is immediately obvious that the water for them is insufficient and in conditions that raise questions about its hygiene, but another picture is even more alarming.

One of the Zoo's wolves is standing in its enclosure, with visible wounds on its body, and it is unknown whether it is receiving the necessary veterinary treatment.

Animals cannot show that they are thirsty, that they are suffering from the heat or that they are in pain, they cannot leave their place, they cannot ask for help. And precisely for this reason, on days when temperatures scorch the country, the responsibility of people and institutions for their well-being becomes even greater. The man who placed them there also has the responsibility to guarantee them the minimum living conditions, the care and protection they deserve.

The Tirana Zoo is a space that is visited every day by tourists and citizens. But the images seen today are not only an unpleasant sight, but also disturbing and alarming. They should not pass as just another news of the day. They should serve as a call for control, transparency and institutional responsibility.

Behind bars are not exhibition objects. They are living beings, placed in a space from which they cannot leave and cannot take care of themselves. Man keeps them there and he also has the obligation to guarantee them dignified living conditions.

People's visits out of love and curiosity for animals may be the reason a zoo exists, but it can never be the reason its inhabitants suffer. /BW
