US-France clash at the UN, American delegation leaves meeting after criticism of vote on human rights

The United States delegation walked out of a UN Security Council meeting during the speech of the French ambassador, in protest at Paris' criticism of Washington's stance in a recent vote on human rights.
The diplomatic clash began last week, after the US voted alongside Russia and North Korea against extending Volker Turk's mandate as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
After the vote, the French mission to the UN sharply criticized Washington on the social network X, declaring that "the US was once a beacon of human rights. Not anymore."
In response, US Ambassador Mike Waltz accused France of supporting an official who, according to him, has criticized democratic countries while showing tolerance towards oppressive regimes.
The US delegation's departure came during an emergency Security Council meeting on the war in Ukraine, while French Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont was delivering his speech. US Ambassador Dan Negrea said the US would continue similar protests until France withdrew from what he called "contemptuous and disrespectful rhetoric".
Volker Turk's second term was approved with 144 votes in favor, 10 against and 13 abstentions, amid growing tensions between the US administration and the United Nations.
Meanwhile, UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq refused to comment on the departure of the US delegation, limiting himself to stressing that the organization expects all member states to respect its decisions.
