"34 years of politics have depopulated the country", Naim Hasani: The

Candidate for MP from the Euro-Atlantic Coalition in the Shkodra district, Naim Hasani, in an interview with A2 CNN, said that the daily contact he has with Albanians living in Britain has pushed him to accept Lulzim Basha's request to run in the May 11 parliamentary elections.

Hasani described the mass exodus of Albanians as a social tragedy, stressing that politics has severely damaged the country, leading to depopulation and an aging population. He noted that Albania has experienced such a massive exodus that it did not even occur during past invasions and that this is a consequence of a lack of orientation and wrong policies.

Hasani called for the inclusion of the Albanian diaspora and intellectuals in political processes, underlining the importance of a policy that responds to the expectations of Albanians and that puts the citizen at the center of attention.

Excerpt from the interview

Contact with Albanians was the reason that motivated me to accept Mr. Basha's request to become part of the coalition and the candidates for the parliamentary elections of May 11. It is the daily contact that I have in Britain with young Albanians, with young Albanians, with all those Albanians who have left over the years, who are leaving today, abandoning their families. I was in Shkodra yesterday, and today, and you will campaign, but you go from house to house, you will have contacts in different villages, you have no one. It is a tragedy, an extraordinary social drama, it is something that I have said before. It is an extraordinary motivation for Albania not to be depopulated, politics has done extraordinary damage to our country, seeing that an aging, such an extraordinary depopulation causes a serious wound that is very difficult to recover for Albania and for Albanians. The massive departure and aging of Albania, the absence of anyone remaining in these lands, who cares about this? There have been invaders in Albania for centuries who have come and failed to make such a massive exodus as has happened in Albania in these 34 years. This has happened precisely because of a lack of orientation, for personal struggle, for personal positions, from a different policy than what Albanians expect. In Britain, the politician is the main accountability, the number one to the citizens. Here, citizens use them for voting day, for the month of the campaign and do not want to know about them anymore. I think the time has come for there to be an involvement of the diaspora, the different intellectuals wherever they are.
