State Department report on Albania published: Support SPAK, increase corruption investigations!

The US State Department has published a report on the fight against narcotics and money laundering. For Albania, there is a call for increased investigations, as most money laundering is related to drug trafficking and corruption.
The majority of money laundering in Albania is linked to drug trafficking, tax evasion and corruption. This is the conclusion of the US State Department, in its latest report on the fight against crime and narcotics, and for this reason it calls for a deeper investigation by the judiciary.
“ Albania should implement existing laws and expand the capacity of police and prosecutors to focus on corruption, money laundering and economic crimes. Albania should fully implement the judicial reform launched in 2016-2017.”
In the report, the US Department of State evaluates the work of the Special Prosecution Office, mentioning the investigations against former Prime Minister Sali Berisha and former Minister of Environment Lefter Koka.
“ In October 2023, SPAK announced an investigation into former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, sanctioned by the US for corruption, after his son-in-law benefited from nearly $5 million. Also in October, the courts convicted former Environment Minister Koka of money laundering, corruption and abuse of office because a company gave him $1.47 million. ”
In its assessments of business activity and the inspection regime, DASH writes that legislation for microcredit institutions and digital currencies should be regulated.
