A common European migration policy would prevent its political exploitation, Prime Minister Edi Rama declared in an interview with the largest Spanish newspaper "El Mundo".

Edi Rama, prime minister of Albania since 2013 and mayor of Tirana for more than a decade, devoted himself to professional basketball, painting, university teaching and journalism before entering politics. The former can be guessed from his impressive two-meter height. The latter is due to the enthusiastic way in which he promotes his country, a tourist destination that has been on the rise in recent years and which he jokes about as “as beautiful as Spain, but cheaper”.
Rama was in Madrid on Friday to present the 30th edition of the World Congress of Justice, organized by the World Association of Jurists, chaired by lawyer Javier Cremades, which will be held in the Albanian capital in 2027. He was previously received by King Felipe VI at the “La Zarzuela” palace. The prime minister responds to President Trump’s first moves and refers to the controversial plan to deport immigrants to Albania by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, whom he calls “my Italian sister.”
He calls on Europe to implement a common migration policy, to protect border control, but also to open up to legal immigration.
International politics seems to be accelerating every day. How do you interpret Trump's plan for the Gaza Strip?
I have no comment on this. I think the plan needs to be clarified, understood and harmonized with all other stakeholders. It's still early.
Other decisions of the new US president affect his country, such as the virtual disappearance of the agency responsible for international aid (USAID) and the suspension of the resettlement of Afghan refugees. How will Albania handle it?
There will be no problem with the Afghan refugees living in Albania. If they want to stay in our country, they can do so, they cannot return to their country and stop the violence. These are not big numbers for us, they are only a few hundred people.
The Italian judiciary has almost paralyzed the migration agreement between the country and Italy, and the European Court of Justice will soon rule on safe countries. Do you have confidence in the future of this plan?
Ju duhet të pyesni italianët, nuk më takon mua të them se çfarë do të ndodhë. Ne nënshkruam marrëveshjen dhe është Italia që e zbaton, sepse ne nuk jemi pjesë e saj. Ne thjesht përgjigjemi kur fqinji ynë na kërkon ndihmë. Evropa duhet të zbatojë një politikë të përbashkët migracioni, e cila shmang përdorimin politik, dhe të mbrojë kontrollin kufitar, por edhe të hapet ndaj imigracionit legal.

Kosova është një vend demokratik, i gjallë dhe i larmishëm. Dhe, si të gjitha vendet e Ballkanit, lufton me shumë pasion dhe shumë zhurmë, por kjo është në rregull. E uroj për mirë, por nuk kam asnjë preferencë për rezultatet e zgjedhjeve. Unë jam një mik dhe i respektoj të gjithë. Kosovarëve u uroj gjithë të mirat për çfarëdo vendimi që do të marrin.
Në Serbi, presidenti Vuçiç është përballur me protesta studentore prej tre muajsh dhe kryeministri dha dorëheqjen javën e kaluar. Cili është mendimi juaj për atë që po ndodh?
Problemi që kam me opozitën serbe është, pa hyrë në dinamikën e politikës së brendshme, se ajo nuk duket më pro evropiane apo pro perëndimore se sa presidenti. Sa i përket Kosovës, ata nuk duket të jenë më përparimtarë. Për pjesën tjetër, nuk është raasti im të komentoj, sepse është çështje e brendshme e Serbisë. Por, unë besoj dhe shpresoj se në fund dialogu do të duhet të mbizotërojë. Sepse marrja me forcë e një qeverie nuk duhet të ndodhë kurrë në tokën evropiane.
Si po ecin negociatat për anëtarësimin e Shqipërisë në BE?
Negociatat me BE-në po shkojnë shumë mirë, ne po punojmë shumë për ta arritur këtë. Ne kemi një plan shumë ambicioz së bashku me Komisionin Evropian deri në vitin 2027 për të ecur përpara në anën politike dhe, nëse gjithçka shkon sipas planit, gjë që nuk është e lehtë të thuhet në këto kohë kur diçka ndodh çdo ditë, Shqipëria mund të jetë anëtare e BE-së në vitin 2030.
A e shihni integrimin më afër se një vit më parë?
Është më afër që kur Vladimir Putin vendosi të pushtojë Ukrainën, sepse, për fat të keq, miqtë tanë në Bruksel dhe në kryeqytetet evropiane u detyruan të zgjoheshin në këtë mënyrë. Shpresoj se Trump do të jetë një tjetër thirrje zgjimi për Evropën që të ndryshojë dhe të jetë më realiste për sfidat dhe me kalimin e kohës: të mos e shtyjë ndryshimin e saj, sepse përndryshe mund të nënkuptojë fundin e Evropës.
A mendoni se anëtarësimi i ardhshëm i Ballkanit në BE është i dëmshëm për ju nëse shihet si një bllok?
Nuk funksionon kështu, sepse negociatat janë të bazuara në merita dhe këto janë të pandashme. Çdo vend duhet të përmbushë kriteret dhe secili ka shpejtësinë e tij, aftësitë e veta dhe agjendën e tij.
