Record rainfall in South Korea, flooding Gyeongsang province, landslide causes one victim

Heavy rainfall has caused major flooding and landslides in South Korea's Gyeongsang Province, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
The city of Geoje has been hit by extraordinary rainfall. 124.5 millimeters of rain were recorded in one hour, the highest amount recorded in the city since meteorological measurements began in 1972.
Over 400 millimeters of rain fell in Geoje overnight from Sunday to Monday. The situation was worsened by landslides. A landslide hit a building in the southeastern city, destroying the first floor of the building.
Rescue teams pulled three people from the building, but one of them did not survive. The other two were injured.
Images posted on social media showed cars submerged in water, while city streets were engulfed in powerful currents. Authorities have suspended bus services and garbage collection in some areas due to flooded and damaged roads.

Some of the city's tourist attractions have also been closed. Residents have been asked to avoid vehicle travel, stay away from rivers and flood-prone areas, and evacuate to safe places if the situation worsens.
Extreme weather has also affected other countries in East and Southeast Asia. Heavy rains and storms have caused flooding and extensive damage in China, Japan and the Philippines.
In Japan, heavy rains in recent days have killed at least 10 people and stranded thousands at Narita Airport. The flooding has also left more than 20,000 households without power.
Weather experts warn that typhoon season could be more intense than usual this year.
