Actor Sam Neill, star of "Jurassic Park" and "Peaky Blinders," dies at 78

World cinema in mourning. Actor Sam Neill, known for his leading role as paleontologist Alan Grant in "Jurassic Park," has died at the age of 78 in Australia.

The actor's death was announced in a statement posted on his Instagram account. No cause of death was given, but the actor had recently revealed that he had beaten cancer after being diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, in 2022.

"It is with deep sadness that the family of Sam Neill announce the news of his death on Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by his family and passed away with the dignity that characterized his entire life. The loss was unexpected, but blessed by the fact that Sam is now cancer-free," the family said.

Neill was an actor who starred in dozens of Hollywood films. In addition to his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in the "Jurassic Park" series, Neill is also known for other films such as "The Portable Door," "The Piano," "The Hunt for Red October," and "Event Horizon."

The actor first became known to international audiences in Armstrong’s 1979 film “My Brilliant Career.” He later appeared in Phillip Noyce’s “Dead Calm,” a stylish thriller starring the then-relatively unknown Nicole Kidman.

Neill earned acclaim for his performances in films including “The Piano,” “The Hunt For Red October,” and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople.”

 
He also found success on television, playing Major Chester Campbell in the first two seasons of "Peaky Blinders", with further appearances on "The Tudors", "The Simpsons", "Merlin and Alcatraz".
