The mayor strongly accuses the government: Rama excluded me from the meeting, Kumbaro blocks investments to merge Memaliaj

The Mayor of Memaliaj Municipality, Albert Malaj, has exploded against Edi Rama's government, denouncing what he calls an organized attempt to dissolve the Memaliaj Municipality.

Malaj claims that the decision is being prepared within the framework of the Administrative-Territorial Reform and raises questions about why it was left out of the meeting where the Prime Minister gathered the mayors of municipalities that are at risk of merging.

In his response, Malaj directly accuses the Prime Minister and the group drafting the reform of aiming to eliminate Memaliaj as a separate entity. He also accuses Minister Mirela Kumbaro of blocking investments for the municipality.

According to Malaj, the pressure is not only at the government level, but has also extended to the Municipal Council, where, according to him, the work and development of the municipality is being hindered.

"How do we understand this? Have they decided? Will they dissolve Memaliaj?" Malaj writes, considering the lack of an invitation as a signal that Memaliaj's fate may already be decided.

The mayor also recalls the warning he made at the Gjirokastra meeting, where, according to him, "the power of cardboard" is taking hold.

Faced with this situation, Malaj has chosen to call citizens to protest. The rally has been announced for tomorrow, at 8:00 PM, at "Minatori" Square, in the center of Memaliaj.

Clashes at Rama's meeting with mayors

Protests against the new territorial map were also seen yesterday during the roundtable discussions with the mayors of the municipalities. It is learned that the meeting was opened by the mayor of Poliçan, Adriatik Zotkaj, who requested explanations for the criteria on which the merger of several municipalities is being decided.

Zotkaj is reported to have asked why Peqin, Roskovec and Vau i Dejës are not included in the list of municipalities expected to be merged, while Poliçan is, despite the fact that, according to him, these units have a weaker performance.

The mayor also recalled the 2014 reform, arguing that it did not bring the expected results and that one of the indicators of its failure is the continued decline in population.

According to sources, in response to Zotkaj, Prime Minister Edi Rama mentioned the burning of Socialist Party cards in Poliçan, describing it as a shameful act and telling the mayor that he should not have been part of the meeting.

The clash did not end there. Zotkaj is said to have responded to Rama, describing as "ingratitude" the project that envisages the merger of Poliçan and its union with Berat.

"We didn't do the shamelessness, but you who are making these decisions," Zotkaj is reported to have declared.

The table also included debates with leaders of other municipalities. The mayor of Poliçan also took aim at the leader of Dimal and the mayor of Divjaka, while Juliana Memaj is said to have been the first to leave the meeting.
