DASH officially notifies the Senate of the closure of USAID, some of the agency's functions will be transferred under the department

The US Department of State officially notified Congress today that it was effectively closing the US Agency for International Development, USAID, and would transfer some of its functions under the department.

The reorganization will take place by July 1, the State Department said, sounding a death knell for USAID, a multibillion-dollar agency that fought poverty and hunger around the world.

The Trump administration has accused USAID of mismanaging taxpayer dollars and funding overseas programs that are not in the interests of the United States.

Current and former USAID aid employees and experts argue that the agency, while imperfect, meets vital humanitarian needs and strengthens America's soft power.
