Panic in Italy, mother saves 1-year-old daughter from Romanian kidnapping

It was 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, when a mother, a father, and their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter were leaving a supermarket in Bergamo.
At the door, they encounter a man who, without hesitation, violently grabs the little girl by the legs and tries to drag her away. Fortunately, the parents' quick reaction and the help of supermarket employees prevented the kidnapping: the father stopped the man, while the mother held her daughter in her arms.
It all ended with the arrest by law enforcement of a 37-year-old Romanian man, homeless and with no criminal record. Reviewing the footage from the supermarket's security cameras allowed authorities to reconstruct the events and charge the perpetrator with attempted kidnapping of a minor and aggravated assault, because, in that scuffle, the child suffered a fractured femur, as revealed by medical tests carried out at the hospital.
Witnesses then recount what happened, saying that the mother's screams attracted the attention of other citizens to help the family who were fighting with the 37-year-old Romanian.
"The mother's scream was terrifying. It still rings in my ears. I took out my phone to call the police, but I saw that there was not much time and I approached, grabbing the man who was holding the child by the jacket, to prevent him from leaving," says a citizen in her 50s, a witness at the scene.
