Warning from Germany: "American Brexit" could lead to open trade wars

US tariffs are plunging the world into an "open trade war", the president of a German trade association said on Thursday.
His warning came a few hours after US President Donald Trump announced 10% tariffs on all imports, foreign media reported.
Dirk Jandura, president of the German Federation of Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services (BGA), called the decision a "frontal attack on global trade."
"With drastic increases in tariffs on more than 100 trading partners, the US president is plunging the world into an open trade war with an American Brexit," Jandura said.
"I assume that the conflict will have a significant impact on our economic growth," he added.
As an exporting country, Germany will be hit particularly hard by Trump's announced 20% tariff on goods from the European Union, which will take effect on April 9.
The country's crucial automotive sector is already facing massive disruptions, after a massive 25% US tariff on all imported cars went into effect overnight.
