Tom Hanks' daughter talks about her childhood: Years of confusion and violence

Elizabeth Hanks, the daughter of Tom Hanks and his first wife, Samantha Lewis, has spoken about her turbulent childhood and complicated relationship with her mother in her new book, The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road.
In an excerpt obtained by People, the author, who now uses the pen name EA, writes about how the breakup of her parents’ marriage in 1985 shaped her childhood and the early years of her brother, Colin Hanks. “I’m a child from a first (not famous) marriage. My only memories of my parents being in the same place at the same time are Colin’s graduation and my high school graduation,” she begins.
The now 42-year-old author writes that she was born in Burbank, but has very few memories of her early years in Los Angeles because her mother moved with her, without warning, six hours away to Sacramento, shortly after her divorce from the "Forrest Gump" star.
“Eventually, child support was agreed upon and I would visit my father and stepmother, and soon my younger brothers, on weekends and in the summer, but from the ages of 5 to 14, my years were filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and no love. I was a Sacramento girl, ” she says.
However, things changed "over the years" and her mother's mental health deteriorated.
“The yard was so full of dog poop you couldn’t walk around it, the house reeked of smoke. The refrigerator was empty or full of expired food, and my mother spent more and more time in the big bed reading the Bible,” she describes.
Elizabeth Hanks then referred to a violent incident she experienced. " One night, the emotional abuse turned into physical abuse, and after that, I moved to Los Angeles, right in the middle of seventh grade, " she explained.
Lewis, whose real name was Susan Dillingham, died of lung cancer in 2002 at the age of 49. Elizabeth Hanks was just 19 at the time.
Lewis met Tom Hanks in 1970 while they were both studying theater in Sacramento. The then-couple had their first child, Colin, in 1977 and married a year later. They became parents for the second time in 1982, when Elizabeth was born. However, their happiness was short-lived and the couple separated in 1985. The divorce was finalized two years later.
