Easter eggs, Italians will face a bitter surprise this year

Instead of a sweet gift, this Easter Italians will face a more bitter surprise, a significant increase in prices.

The show Dritto e Rovescio, broadcast on Thursday, April 3 on Rete 4, featured a report on this phenomenon, analyzing in particular prices in the food sector, which have marked a significant increase on the eve of the holiday.

All eyes are on the price of Easter eggs, which are reportedly up to 40% more expensive than last year. According to Codacons, the rising cost of cocoa and a butter supply crisis have caused the price of the traditional Colomba dessert to rise by 36%, while that of eggs has risen by 40%.

Pastry chef Adolfo Stefanelli, interviewed by Rete 4, confirmed the progressive increase in prices:
“These eggs today cost around 70 euros,” he explained. “Before I was selling them for 60 euros, three years ago for 45, and four years ago for 40. Prices have started to increase more and more frequently in recent years.”

Among the main factors is the price of cocoa, which, according to Stefanelli, has increased by 175%. “This has affected all products containing cocoa – from fast food to Easter eggs. The daily energy cost in the pastry shop alone is up to six thousand euros.”

The report also included a table showing the increase in raw material prices. Dark chocolate alone has gone from 17.60 euros per kilogram in May 2024 to 36.47 euros currently. In a machine that processes 20 kg of chocolate, this means almost two thousand euros in expenses.

The price of packaging has also increased significantly, adding to the pastry chefs' concerns. "I was afraid I would lose customers," Stefanelli admitted.

The situation is no better in supermarkets, where Easter eggs are being sold at prices reaching up to 90 euros per kilogram. Easter this year has never been more expensive.
