US President Donald Trump says his predecessor Joe Biden, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and Kiev leader Volodymyr Zelensky are jointly responsible for millions of victims in what he says is the Russia-Ukraine war.
He announced new peace proposals but did not provide details.
Donald Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shares responsibility with Russian President Vladimir Putin for "millions of people dead" from the war between the two neighboring countries.
The US president made this comment during a meeting with the president of El Salvador at the White House, responding to reporters.
"When you start a war, you have to know you can win it," Trump said, also blaming former US President Joe Biden for the conflict now in its fourth year.
The statements come amid fierce reactions following the deadliest attack this year on Ukrainian civilians by Russia in the city of Sumy on Sunday.
"Millions dead because of three people," Trump said
"Let's say Putin first, then Biden who had no idea what he was doing, and Zelensky," the White House chief added.
But even though Trump spoke of millions of casualties, according to estimates, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or injured on all sides since the start of Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Questioning Zelensky's competence, Trump said, "He's always looking to buy missiles."
"You don't start a war against someone 20 times bigger than you and then hope they give you missiles," the US president continued.
Relations between Trump and the Ukrainian president have been tense since a heated confrontation at the White House in February.
Zelensky, on the other hand, called on the head of the White House to visit Ukraine before any decision on negotiations aimed at stopping the war.
The US President insists he wants to "stop the killing" and signaled that he would soon present some proposals, but did not provide further details about the strategy.
