Rutte: Europe must increase defense spending

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Saturday that Europe must increase its spending. The alliance leader gave a speech at the Munich Security Conference where he called on NATO's European members to come up with concrete proposals and ideas, increase spending, and continue training and supplying weapons.

He added that NATO countries' current target of 2% defense spending is likely to be replaced by a much higher figure. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the United States is right to say that Europe does not spend enough on defense.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Saturday at the Munich Conference that Europe will have to make difficult choices and sacrifices to confront the threats to it and guarantee its security.

"We must prepare. We will have to face difficult days, make difficult decisions and even sacrifices that we did not expect until now to guarantee this security," Mr Barrot said, speaking to reporters.

Minister Barrot also said that after a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, he believes that the US administration is still forming its opinion on how the US should handle the Ukraine crisis.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for the creation of a European army, saying the continent can no longer rely on the United States for protection and will only be respected by Washington with a strong military.

He reiterated that Ukraine would never accept a peace agreement reached behind its back or without Kiev's involvement./ VOA
