Accused of embezzling EU funds, Le Pen calls on supporters: I will fight a political decision, not a judicial one

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has told supporters in Paris that she will fight "a political, not judicial, decision" that could bar her from the next presidential election.
A rival rally denounced an "existential threat" to the rule of law following her conviction for embezzlement of public funds.
"This decision has trampled on everything I hold most dear: my people, my country and my honor," the National Rally leader told a crowd of flag-waving supporters as the country's three main political movements held events in Paris.
Speaking from a temporary stage in front of the Hôtel des Invalides with the party's 120 members of parliament behind her, Le Pen said she would not give up, adding: "It is we who are the most ardent defenders of the rule of law."
Le Pen was sentenced to four years in prison, two of which were suspended and two of which can be served with an electronic bracelet, was fined 100,000 euros and under a law she had supported was banned from running for public office for five years with immediate effect.
The Paris Court of Appeal has said it will rule on her case by next summer, allowing her to run in the 2027 presidential race if her conviction is overturned, which is seen as unlikely, or lifting her ban on running for public office.
