Low-cost tickets, as a result of the competition of airlines connecting Tirana with Athens, are challenging and diminishing the traditional way of traveling by bus or car. According to data from the Hellenic Confederation Institute of Tourism (Chart 1), the number of vehicle entries that crossed the Albanian-Greek border last year was recorded at 1.64 million, decreasing by 5% compared to 2023.

On the other hand, direct flights from Rinas Airport to Athens have increased by 10%, according to data from TIA (Chart 2). For 2024, a total of 300 thousand aircraft landings and take-offs have been recorded, a significant increase that confirms the increase in passenger traffic on this route.

Unlike bus travel, low-cost flights from Tirana to Athens offer very affordable tickets, ranging from 35 to 40 euros (Chart 3). For those who book in advance, even cheaper tickets can be found.

In comparison, traveling by bus not only takes longer to arrive, taking up to five times longer than a flight, but it is also more expensive. Tickets for such a trip cost around 40-45 euros, which is 23% more than low-cost airline tickets./ SCAN
