West Nile fever spreads quickly, Greece reports 232 cases and 19 deaths, Albania only one infected

West Nile fever is spreading rapidly in Greece. According to the National Public Health Organization, 75 new cases have been diagnosed in the past week, bringing the total number of infected people to 232.
The death toll has also risen. Greece has reported 19 deaths so far, all of them aged 65 and over. Of all the patients affected, 165 have shown symptoms related to the central nervous system, such as encephalitis, meningitis or acute paralysis, while 67 others have shown mild symptoms.
Similarly, Italy has reported 432 cases of West Nile fever and 17 deaths. North Macedonia has had 51 people infected with the virus and 6 deaths.
At least these are the latest data from the national health authorities of these countries, who report every week to the ECDC, the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Something that Albania also does, as a country acceding to the EU.
But currently Albania has diagnosed and reported only one case of West Nile Fever. He is a 72-year-old man from Korça, who continues to be treated at the Regional Hospital of this region.
This disease not only affects humans, but also animals. In Greece, signs of the disease's circulation have also been found in horses and other equines.
But in animals, it does not have the same consequences as in humans, where in many cases it passes without symptoms, but in 20% of infected cases it causes severe forms of the disease, even death.
