Criticized by Rama for defending Veliaj, Etjen Xhafaj: I did not attack SPAK!

Socialist Etjen Xhafaj has commented on the criticism he received from Prime Minister Edi Rama for defending Mayor Erion Veliaj and for what were perceived as attacks on SPAK.

He stated that his intention was not to attack SPAK or the justice reform, but his interview when he spoke about Veliaj was interpreted differently.

"At any moment, criticism somehow makes you go back and reflect on what you said. I definitely understood it, because there are some moments that can be interpreted differently in that interview, as an attack on SPAK, which was not the case at any moment," he said.

Asked if his statement had a cost, being left on the open list by Prime Minister Rama, Xhafa said no.

"Not at any moment! The Prime Minister was very clear, both at the Parliamentary Group meeting two days before my interview and in a communication before that. I don't think it cost me, I expected it," he said.

Etjen Xhafaj : At every moment, criticism somehow makes you go back and reflect on what you said. I definitely understood that, because there are some moments that can be interpreted differently in that interview, as an attack on SPAK, which was not the case at any moment.

The focus of the work I do is to compare the EU standard where I did my studies and with these here in Albania. At no point was there an intention to protest against SPAK. It and the prosecutors do their job, have their own approach to law enforcement, have other structures and links of the judicial system.

The Prime Minister expressed the idea of the form this has taken, where our focus should be on a process that is impartial and sets an equal standard for all. Like this issue, there are certainly others, which I, or others, think should be considered in this case.

However, this does not mean that we have attacked, criticized or questioned the justice reform. The SP remains fully committed to the justice reform, to the work of SPAK, GJKKO, because they are for a step towards the EU.

Did what you said about Veliaj and SPAK cost you the removal from the closed list? Was there a cost?

Xhafaj: No, not at any moment! The Prime Minister had been very clear at the Parliamentary Group meeting two days before my interview and a communication before that. I don't think it cost me what I was waiting for. The open list race doesn't scare me.
