On Sunday, the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania will have a new archbishop.

The Holy Synod of the Church has announced that the election will take place on the Second Sunday of Lent, at the Synodal Center, after the Divine Liturgy.

It has been announced that the process will begin in the morning with Sunday mass, where citizens, but also leaders of all Orthodox metropolitans of Albania and, of course, guests will be present.

They will attend the Divine Liturgy. While the members of the Synod are all at the Mass, where they will swear at the holy table for the responsibility they have to vote for the most worthy and responsible among them.

After the mass, the election process by the Synod begins and, after the voting is over, the name of the new Archbishop is announced.

He will be welcomed with a special ceremony and will enter the Cathedral Church in Tirana, while its bells and the bells of all Orthodox churches in Albania will ring in honor of this process.

Afterwards, the ceremony foresees that the new Archbishop will deliver his message to the faithful. The new Archbishop is thus elected to succeed Archbishop Anastasios, who passed away, in the highest office of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.

Anastasius was appointed Archbishop of Albania by the Patriarchate of Istanbul immediately after communism fell, and his task was to rebuild a church destroyed by atheism.

After Anastasius' death, his will was read and one of his wishes was the election of an Albanian cleric as head of the Church.

The vast majority of the clergy are Albanians. In the Metropolis of Korça, His Grace Joani; in the Metropolis of Berat, Vlora and Kanina, His Grace Asti; in the Metropolis of Apollonia and Fier, His Grace Nikolla; in the Metropolis of Elbasan, His Grace; in the Metropolis of Kruja, His Grace Anastasi.

These are Albanian citizens and, together with the clergy of Amantia and Gjirokastra, who are Greek citizens, make up the Synod that will vote to elect one of them as head of the Church. /Tch
