Residents "landed" in front of Bankers' door, protest escalates

Today's civic protest in front of the Bankers Petroleum offices was accompanied by tensions, where dozens of residents of the villages of Marinzë, Sheqishte, Belinë, Kallm and Zharrëzë came together to raise their voices regarding their lands being used by the company in question. While the residents claim that they have not received full payments for the use of their lands, today they landed in Marinzë for the umpteenth time, opposing the work of Bankers oil workers.

However, an unexpected clash occurred between the protesters and the Bankers security guards. After the residents were seen breaking through the fence of the Bankers building, in an attempt to enter the building in question, the security guards immediately intervened, telling them that they had orders not to allow them in.

"Get out of there," residents are heard saying to the security guards. In turn, the latter have made it clear that they are not allowed to enter the building.

In statements given to the media present at their rally today, the protesters expressed disappointment with the contract they signed with Bankers, which they say did not adhere to the conditions that were initially discussed between the parties, adding that the costs of using their land have been halved.

This is the second time this summer that the residents of Marinza and beyond have come together to demand accountability from Bankers for the way their lands are being used. The residents have also protested in front of the company's building in July.
