'War' balance on the roads, accidents increased by 10% during the months of January-July, the main cause being driver carelessness!

Road accidents in Albania increased by 10% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period a year earlier, while July also marked more cases than a year earlier, according to data published by the Institute of Statistics.
In July, 165 road accidents were recorded, up from 131 in July 2025. The number of people killed and injured reached 235, compared to 194 a year earlier.
In the period January-July, the number of accidents reached 844, up from 767 in the same period last year. The number of killed and injured reached 1,187 people, up from 1,077 in the first seven months of 2025.
INSTAT said that 90.3% of July's accidents occurred as a result of driver behavior. The 25-34 age group accounted for 21.8% of the total number of accidents recorded.
Tirana recorded the highest number of accidents in July, with 59 cases, compared to 37 a year earlier. The capital recorded 74 people killed or injured. In the first seven months of the year, Tirana counted 336 accidents, up from 219 in the same period in 2025.
According to INSTAT, the majority of accidents by time of day were recorded between 19:00 and 24:00, with 25.5% of the total.
Thursday was the day with the highest percentage of accidents, at 18.8%, while Tuesday had the lowest level, at 12.1%.
The data is provided by the General Directorate of the State Police and processed by INSTAT. The figures for the last month are preliminary and subject to review.
The increase in accidents comes at a time when there have been a number of reactions and measures to increase care at the wheel, including changes to the Highway Code and increased field checks.
Another element that is often mentioned, in addition to the behavior of drivers, is the condition of the roads and areas known as "black spots". Interventions have been carried out in some of them from time to time, but despite this, they continue to be identified in the problem of road accidents./Monitor
