Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte arrested! International Criminal

Philippine police have arrested former President Rodrigo Duterte after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for him, charging him with crimes against humanity over his deadly war on drugs. During his presidency, more than 6,000 people were killed without trial by police in the name of the war on drugs.

Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, was arrested in Manila on Tuesday on a warrant from the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity in his war on drugs, which included the executions of thousands of Filipinos.

During the arrest, the 79-year-old asked about the reason for this arrest warrant, saying: What crime have I committed?

He has not apologized for his brutal war on drugs, in which thousands of people lost their lives when he was president from 2016 to 2022.

While Duterte's former spokesman said the arrest was illegal, as the Philippines withdrew from the International Criminal Court in 2019.

The court, meanwhile, said it has jurisdiction in the Philippines over crimes allegedly committed before the country left as a member. Activists have called the arrest a historic moment.

Duterte was in Hong Kong before his arrest, where he was campaigning for the May 12 midterm elections as he is running for mayor of Davao.

"What is my sin? I did everything in my time for peace for the Filipino people," he told the rally before returning from Hong Kong.

We recall that with violent rhetoric, Duterte ordered security forces to execute without trial any person suspected of being a drug distributor or user.

At least 6,000 people have died in the war. However, human rights groups say the number could be higher, with the vast majority of victims being poor urban Filipinos, some of whom were minors and people who had no connection to the drug trade.

The case will be a high-profile test for the court, which in recent months has sought the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the head of the military junta in Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing, accusing both of crimes against humanity.
