Following the tragedy with 59 victims in Kocani, North Macedonia, the mayor of this municipality, Ljubco Papazov, has resigned.
In the early hours of yesterday morning, the Pulse nightclub was engulfed in flames, leaving behind 59 victims (aged 15-25) and 155 injured, 18 of them in serious condition. The cause of the fire was the throwing of pyrotechnics.
The Mayor of Koçan says that this is a difficult moment for the country. He demands an investigation into the incident and emphasizes that the resignation is irrevocable. He also emphasizes that he is at the disposal of the institutions.
"Dear fellow citizens,
In these most difficult moments for our country and for me personally, I would like to announce that I am irrevocably resigning from the position of Mayor of Kocani.
This loss is great!
There are no words that can describe the pain we all feel. Those children were our children. I knew most of them, I knew their families, and some of them were even family friends.
The shock and sadness I feel will accompany me for the rest of my life. This tragedy has plunged Kocani and Macedonia into mourning, and the void it has left behind is unbearable.
I ask all competent institutions to investigate the responsibility of all those involved! Inaction is also responsibility. All details must be investigated, all shortcomings must be found, and all those who contributed to this tragedy must be held accountable. I am fully at the disposal of the institutions. Although according to the law I had no direct competence in this case, I am ready to answer all questions about everything, including my personal actions.
There are no words that can describe my pain! But, in these moments, we must show integrity, manifest full responsibility and demonstrate a change in the way we act. With our behavior, we must set an example that we are against a system that does not work. If there is any basis for responsibility against me, I call on the prosecutor's office to investigate it and act in accordance with the laws.
For me, after this tragedy, nothing has the same meaning anymore! These were our children! Many, rightly, have noticed why I did not go out in public all day yesterday. But those who know me know how broken I am and how I experience what has happened. It is difficult, and I will cope with it with great difficulty.
I have worked honestly and dedicatedly my entire life!
"I never thought that my commitment would end this way, but now I withdraw from this duty, praying to God for the souls of our children, for their families and for the people of Macedonia!" declared the Mayor of Kocani, Lupço Papazov.
