Reuters: 200 Russian soldiers secretly training in China to fight in Ukraine

As Russian President Vladimir Putin is on an official visit to China, a report published by Reuters sheds light on Beijing's covert military involvement in the war in Ukraine. According to the agency, at least 200 Russian soldiers have been secretly trained in China and then returned to take part in combat operations in Ukraine.

Reuters, citing three European intelligence services and documents obtained by them, reports that a Russian-Chinese agreement signed in Beijing on July 2, 2025, provided for the conduct of secret military training sessions.

According to the documents, Russian soldiers have been trained at military facilities in Beijing and the eastern city of Nanjing, in areas including the use of drones, electronic warfare, military aviation and armored infantry. The agreement also called for hundreds of Chinese soldiers to be trained at military bases in Russia.

Intelligence sources said the training of Russian personnel in China constitutes a new development and signals Beijing's more direct involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, despite China's claims of neutrality.

"By training Russian military personnel at operational and tactical levels, who then participate in the war in Ukraine, China is much more involved in the conflict than previously thought," a European intelligence official was quoted as saying.

According to Reuters, the agreement prohibited any media coverage of the visits and stipulated that no third parties should be informed about the training program.

Two of the intelligence agencies said the Chinese military had been sending personnel for training in Russia since 2024, but sending Russian soldiers to China for training was a new practice.

One of the agencies has confirmed the identities of several Russian servicemen trained in China who were later involved in drone operations in the Crimea and Zaporizhia regions of Ukraine. According to the report, their ranks ranged from junior sergeant to lieutenant colonel.
