Italian researchers raise the alarm: Bologna risks sinking

Bologna, one of the cities in northern Italy, is facing a worrying phenomenon that until now was mainly known in the Netherlands: the gradual subsidence of the land.

The landslide phenomenon is constantly increasing in the Bologna area, where due to natural causes, but above all due to factors related to the impact of human activities, the land is sinking very quickly, in some cases at a rate of over 2 centimeters per year, also increasing the risk of flooding.

According to researchers, the main factors influencing this phenomenon are climate change and human intervention, in particular the excessive exploitation of groundwater, which leads to the drying up of clay layers. In some cases, the land in the Bologna area has sunk by up to 3 meters in recent decades.

According to experts, this could have serious consequences in environmental, urban and economic terms.

The alarm was raised by Giovanni Martinelli, researcher at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, and Andrea Dadomo, geologist, during a conference organized by Confindustria Emilia-Romagna, focusing on water resources management.

Experts call for urgent intervention for an immediate infrastructure investment plan to protect not only the population, but also the region's economic activity.

The phenomenon of subsidence significantly increases the risk of flooding, a problem that has become increasingly frequent in Emilia-Romagna. The alternation of extreme droughts with intense rainfall makes the water system increasingly unstable.
